  • Comments Off on Balochistan law and order case: Fazl terms Supreme Court verdict undemocratic
Terming the Supreme Court verdict in Balochistan law and order case undemocratic, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman on Saturday said that no compromise would be made on the continuation of the democratic process in the country.

Speaking at a news conference at the conclusion of his party's two-day central executive committee (CEC) meeting here, the JUI-F chief said that he was unable to understand the apex court verdict regarding the constitutional status of Balochistan. He also advised the judiciary to refrain from interfering in such matters as it was the 'peoples' right either to elect or reject any government or a political party. "I think, such a decision should be left with the people of Balochistan," he said.

Maulana Fazl also said that his party would not make any compromise on democracy, arguing that judges were not supposed to contest election, but politicians, who "will be facing the people". Commenting on law and order situation in Karachi and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the JUI-F chief also expressed dissatisfaction over the lawlessness, saying that it was responsibility of the government in power to protect the lives of the people.

He made it clear that JUI-F would resist any attempt to delay the upcoming election. "We will not support delay in election and strongly reject any possibility in this regard," he added. The Maulana said that JUI-F would not favour any new amendment on the issue of dual nationality. "We will strongly oppose it," he said, adding that their decision would have been the same even if President Asif Ali Zardari contacted them.

About the restoration of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), Fazl said that an MMA meeting would be called by the second week of next month (January). "Five religio-political party members would decide whether or not to arrange a meeting with Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) stalwarts," he said, adding that they (five party's members) would decide whether or not the JI to be part of the MMA.

Commenting on the Lahore High Court's (LHC) recent decision on the construction of Kalabagh dam, he said that it was a technical issue and not a political one and the decision would not serve this project. To another question, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that JUI-F's general council would meet in February next year to chalk out future strategy. About the caretaker set up, Maulana Fazl said that JUI-F had not yet been contacted in this regard.
